This is the 18th song in Winterreise. This is to demonstrate varied entries given by Schubert. A view of the village of Baudmannsdorf, Poland. The Polish name of the village is Budziwojow. Napoleon was not present in the battle, but he came afterward to the town of Haynau Chojnow. This view of the village is from the point below the location where the battle monument stands.

He fought battles inMay and August, as an infantry soldier. He fougt in four battles, and the third battle was outside of Chojnow. As far as we know he did not have any girlfriends when he was participatig in the battles. However, there were many young men fighting with him, some of whom must have left their sweethearts and wives at home. Let us look at the music, particularly the first page. The voice enters on the 9th measure.

It is unusual in that it does not begin on the upbeat. When we look at the piano part of the song, it is clear that the left hand mimics the horses and the right hand mimics the posthorn. You can hear the posthorn by listening to the right hand melody. The voice depicts the heart of the first person, the person who tells about the experience of waiting for a letter in vain.

Chojnow, located in the lower Silesian area of the current Poland, was a small town at that time, but on the important east-west highway linking Dresden and Breslau. The French army was stationed in the town while the Russian-Prussian coalition was mainly south of the town, in many villages.

For this reason, I imagine, those in the villages were waiting to hear from the town, and the post delivery might have included the update on the French position and how they were preparing for the battle.

Another sad incident in my life was the death of my mother. It happened when I was My father remarried one year later to the daughter of a meat shop owner because my father wanted to give me an education. I grew up in the Jewish neighborhood although my family was Christian. It was because my father was poor. I heard different accents from the German I learned at home and in school in my neighborhood.

I was 18 year old at that time. However, shortly after my arrival at the University, the Prussian King, Frederick William, declared war against Napoleon. First, we need to understand the historical background of the war development before I tell my own experience during this war.

I am not going to write a long history of how Napoleon became an emperor in France.Follow us on Facebook.

We are taken, very effectively, on the final journey. Dietrich Henshel is an admirably unshowy performer. He stands simply beside the piano without swaying or arm waving. Interestingly Kynoch manages his music by technological alchemy — a tablet on the music stand, presumably controlled by a left foot blue tooth pedal.

The concert began with emerging artist Anna Cavaliero singing two Schubert songs. Her singing is crisp and warm and she, too, has a tightly integrated rapport with Kynoch on piano. An advantage of watching digitally, though, is the way the subtitles are now managed.

You are given the whole poem at the side of the screen with a moving highlight so that you know exactly where you are and a line by line translation at the bottom of the screen. The poetry is written in the voice of a young man who, upon seeing his beloved marry another, sets out on foot in the deepest winter to escape memories of her.

His heart is broken, and his life is a torment of memories, dreams, and present pain. The subject matter—a wanderer alone with his sorrows—was a popular theme of the Romantic era. Winterreise Article Media Additional Info. Print Cite verified Cite.

The twenty-four poems of Die Winterreise were written in and The first twelve poems were published separately in and the cycle was published in full in Schubert made his settings of the poems in I have ignored the original metrical scheme but have tried to make the translations as accurate as possible.

I have also tried to use a vocabulary that suggests Romantic poetry. Die Winterreise is primarily about feelings and atmosphere, but there is nevertheless a story, albeit told in a fragmented narrative. A young man, the hero or anti-hero of the poems, arrives in an idyllic town in May Good Night. There he befriends a family of mother, father and daughter and is invited to live with them Good Night.

He falls in love with the daughter and his love is returned, or so he is led to believe Feeling Numb. However, the daughter rejects him to marry a wealthy suitor with the approval of her parents The Weathervane. It is now winter and the hero leaves his adopted home in the dead of night after writing a farewell message to his beloved Good Night. As he leaves the town crows shower him with snow from the roofs Looking Back and he begins a painful journey, constantly tortured by memories of his past happiness Frozen Tears, On the River, The Watercourse.

On his journey he is joined by a raven, possibly symbolic of a death wish The Raven. Eventually he arrives at another town Solitude where it seems he stays for some time as he writes of the post arriving there The Post. The song cycle ends with a particularly bleak image. An organ-grinder or hurdy-gurdy man has a pitch near the town where he plies his trade ignored by the townspeople and harassed by dogs.

I don't think it ever would have occurred to me if Emily Ezust hadn't been looking for translations for her website. The idea is to voluntarily provide song-text translations that are not bound by copyright that can be used by the general public or reprinted for nothing in concert programs.

All the translator is entitled to is to have their name attached to the translation if it is used. In the event, my Winterreise translation did not end up on the song-texts website someone else submitted one firstbut I am still glad that I did it because I learned a great deal about Winterreisenot to mention about the art of translation. I am not a translator by profession.

The few translations I have done before Winterreise were of technical items or interviews, things that did not require an enormous effort to get things exactly right. In those cases, if the translator fudged a little or conveyed the sense of what was being said instead of the actual words, it didn't matter in the least.

But translating a literary work is another question all together. There getting things exactly right is extremely important, and a great deal more effort and care were required.

I had the luxury of being able to take as long as I wished to do the job I had undertaken. I am not satisfied with my Winterreise translation, but my respect for the job that translators of literary works do has increased enormously.

God bless you all! A year or more ago, when lieder-l was still in its infancy, I posted a query to opera-l asking what listeners of art songs were looking for in a translation of song-texts.

The replies were very enlightening. For one thing, I discovered that many more listeners were entirely dependent on translations of song-texts than I had imagined. For another, most people who replied to my query said that they preferred to have line-by-line translations that were as faithful to the original text as possible. The majority of art-song enthusiasts wanted to be able to understand why a particular word in the song text received particular emphasis, or why a line or a stanza received the treatment it had from the composer or performers.

I tried to let those concerns guide me in doing my own translation of Winterreise. Now you can decide whether I was successful. I think that in some cases I was, but I am painfully aware of the many instances in which I was not. Maybe next time So, what did I have in mind when I made my Winterreise translation?

First, I tried to provide line-by-line translations wherever possible and be as faithful as I could to the original text. Second, I wanted to confine myself to what the text actually said without injecting my own interpretation into the translation. And third, I wanted to provide a translation that would not sound silly to an American audience at the tail end of the 20th century. I wanted to eschew the self-consciously poetic without producing something that looked like bad prose arbitrarily made to look like poetry.

No easy task, as it turned out. I made it a point not to look at other translations of Winterreise until I had completed a working translation of every poem because I didn't want to find myself cribbing from another translations, consciously or unconsciously. When I reached that point, I did consult about a half dozen translations. The one I liked the best is Richard Wigmore's, which appears in his book of Schubert song translations and is also used in the Hyperion Schubert Edition.

Of course, my version does not correspond to his in every particular.Imagine you could see Googlebot record your links as it finds them by spidering sites in real time.

Back To Table Of ContentsIf I did submit a site to any directory, it would meet these criteria from Google:Directory entries are often mentioned as another way to promote young sites in the Google index.

There are great, topical directories that add value to the Internet. But there are not many of them in proportion to those of lower quality. If you decide to submit your site to a directory, make sure its on topic, moderated, and well structured. Mass submissions, which are sometimes offered as a quick work-around SEO method, are mostly useless and not likely to serve your purposes. Most directories send you VERY little or no referral traffic and on their own in little numbers have little impact in SERPs.

If you have a new site, a site with low-quality links or in a difficult niche to build links, then submission to high-quality directories is an option for you.

Nana Mouskouri - Serenade de Schubert -

Directory links are an age-old link building tactic. Those type of links should come from better sources in 2017. Some directories probably do have some citation value. It is also perfectly natural to have some directories in your link profile. Links from directories can also help place you in a topical niche online. You can pay for a review, but the rules state you cannot pay for a link.

It is a bit of a catch-22 with directories. You are unlikely to get into severe issues with directory links (in terms of penalties) if you avoid low-quality techniques to manipulate the SERPS (in the short-term).

STICK to using your brand name or URL for your directory listing. Directories are a low-level link building opportunity. While a few links from a few select directories might be worth a listing, do not rely on directories as large part of your future marketing campaigns. If you have very few links or a poor link profile, a few directories can be useful. Stick to higher quality directories. A log time ago (site-wide links are not really in fashion now) I used a very simple method to get 500 links from a PR 5 site with over 3000 links to it.

Yes, a real site. Looking at the SERPs I was interested in, I spotted an expired, suspended domain that was ranking for a term I cherished.

Oxford Lieder Winterreise

The site was suspended and had been like that for the last six months. There was no content on the site, so I knew immediately it was the strength of the incoming back links alone that was keeping this high. I ran the expired suspended domain through a back link checker, identified the most powerful links, contacted the site owners in question and explained to them:Not only did I get a friendly email thanking me for pointing out they had broken links on their site (broken links are never a good thing), I now have 500 new links on a real site pointing to my site.

If you can see a win-win (something as simple as links in return for pointing out another site has broken links on it) jump on it. This process is called backlink reclamation. Do not buy any of these types of links, and I would AVOID like the plague any of these types of pages where you can spot obvious anchor text abuse, often to unrelated sites.
